General Purpoise Serving Up the Freshness!

BY THE FOOD EDITORIAL TEAM

Neatly tucked away in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, the locals flock to this doughnut shop, patiently waiting in a long line that runs out the door. Though the line does move, the faces of those who are waiting are clearly marked with a look of anxiousness.

General Porpoise has been serving yeast doughnuts made fresh daily using farm eggs and filled with seasonal house-made jams, custards, cremes, and jellies.   Started by a Seattle restauranteur and 2016 James Beard Award Winner, Renee Erickson, General Porpoise is one of many restaurants under her belt.

The space is small but welcoming with a loft-like structure and lots of natural light during the morning through the afternoon hours. The interior decor is a modern farm fresh concept with white marble countertops accented with polished industrial lighting fixtures exuding a fresh and airy vibe.

Lined up in a beautiful glass display at the front of the store, the donuts are perfectly organized by flavor.  You'll want one of everything and we pretty much did.

The clark & chloe Team ordered the following:

Vanilla Custard

If you are looking for consistent, this vanilla custard doughnut is the way to go.  It's the perfect gateway doughnut to trying the other flavors.  The right amount of chew, the right amount of sweetness in the custard, the right amount of satisfaction.  The vanilla custard doughnut makes it an easy decision every time!

Plum Jam (Seasonal)

Surprisingly delightful.  What General Porpoise has masterfully perfected is making sure these fillings are not overwhelmingly sweet.  There's a harmonious balance between the plum flavor and enough sweetness to make sure you don't forget that you are treating yourself to a doughnut.

Lemon Curd (Seasonal)

If you like tart in your lemon, this is the doughnut for you.  Definitely not as sweet as the other doughnuts but that's the point.  The curd is the rightfully smooth texture to compliment this doughnut.

Orange Marmalade (Seasonal)

Unfortunately, this doughnut did not hit the spot for us.  To be fair, the preceding doughnuts set a high bar.  We felt this one left us feeling like we needed something more.  The orange marmalade filling was dry and the peels were too chewy and did not compliment the doughnut at all.  We hope to be back and give this one a second chance in case the one we tried was having a bad day.

No doughnut is thought to be complete without its proper partner in crime: Coffee.  General Porpoise serves Verve Coffee for your caffeine fix.
